Jardín Botánico Medellín

The Botanical Garden of Medellín called Joaquín Antonio Uribe is a botanical garden with 13.2 acres, it contains many different trees, plants and flowers. It is made up of native and exotic species from different habitats. The Garden has a great diversity of fauna represented by birds, turtles, reptiles, rodents, insects, and fish.

The history of the Medellín Botanical Garden begins at the end of the 19th century, when the land it occupies today began to be a tourist attraction, this place was known as the El Edén Bath House.

The botanical garden is part of the urban complex of the northern part of the city together with the Parque Norte, the University Station, the Planetarium, Parque Explora and Parque de los deseos. More than 2 million visitors visit the garden during the year. It also has a venue for events and concerts called the “Orquideorama,” an architectural place for the exhibition of flowers. The Garden has the status of being the largest centre of culture and environmental and botanical education in Medellín.

Take in the fresh air, Discover walking the ecological trails and enjoy this green space in the middle of the city. The botanical garden offers a variety of places, such as a tropical forest, a palm garden with more than 120 species, a lagoon, a garden that looks and feels like a desert, the garden of the Orquideorama; under this structure there are live collections of: orchids, bromeliads, carnivorous plants, horns, ferns arboreal. Inside the Orquideorama there is a small lake, with vegetation typical of this type of ecosystem.

A medicinal garden with plants that are known to have healing values like Coca or Yaje, The patio of the azaleas with colours such as pink, red, orange, yellow, purple and white, A vertical garden that measures 8.52 m high, A house of butterflies, the Eras del restaurante which is a garden of spices and edible plants with species such as rosemary, chives, basil, chili pepper, mint, thyme, oregano and a Labyrinth.

Getting Something To Eat

Inside the Jardin Botanico there is a restaurant called “Insitu” offering a variety of food and Cocktails with prices between 30,000 COP and 80,000 COP (10USD to 25 USD) you can check their menu here https://insitu.cluvi.co/in-situ/menu-digital/home and there is also a coffee – restaurant shop called “del Bosque Café”

If you don’t feel like eating inside the botanical garden, there are a variety of other options outside, street food stands, little restaurants offering “menu del dia” (menu of the day) or a shopping center called “Bosque plaza” with more food options.

If you’re afraid of large lizards then, beware of the iguanas. They won’t do anything to you, but they’re everywhere.

Getting There & Parking

Metro: Take the Linea A of the metro towards “Niquia” get off at Universidad metro station, just follow the directions inside the station, the botanical garden is right in front.

Taxi / Uber: Uber and taxi is also a good option; prices from Poblado are approximately 18,000 COP (4USD).

Car: You can also drive and park your car inside the botanical garden, parking rates for cars are $3,000 COP hour or fraction and $12,000 COP day (12 hours).
