Historic Roman Catholic in Envigado

Iglesia de Santa Gertrudis is a notable and historic Roman Catholic church located in the charming town of Envigado, near Medellin. Tucked away in the picturesque town of Envigado, this beautiful church is worth a visit for its impressive architecture and rich history. Iglesia de Santa Gertrudis holds a special place among the locals and those seeking to discover the lesser-known attractions of Medellín and the Aburrá Valley.
The church, constructed in the Greek-Roman architectural style, is situated in close proximity to Parque Envigado, one of the most popular parks in the Medellín metro area. The church’s strategic location next to this vibrant park adds to its appeal, as visitors can easily explore the park’s surroundings, including bars, restaurants, and small shops, creating a lively atmosphere.

The history of the church

The history of Iglesia de Santa Gertrudis dates back to the mid-19th century. In 1859, a growing congregation approached Father Julian Maria Upegui, requesting his assistance in obtaining permission from the Bishop of Medellín to construct a new church to accommodate the expanding population in Envigado. Permission was granted, and construction began in late 1859. However, due to the outbreak of a civil war in Colombia the following year, the project was temporarily suspended.
In 1864, after a period of interruption, construction recommenced under the guidance of Simón de J. Herrera, the parish’s supervisor. Finally, in February 1897, Iglesia de Santa Gertrudis was officially inaugurated and has since remained an active Roman Catholic church.
In 2001, the church embarked on a significant restoration project, which lasted until 2006. This endeavor aimed to preserve the church’s architectural grandeur and ensure its continued existence for future generations to appreciate.

The beautiful interior of the church

Stepping inside Iglesia de Santa Gertrudis, visitors will immediately notice the breathtaking interior adorned with shades of green and white, accented by intricate gold trim. The church’s main altar, a true masterpiece, commands attention with its beauty and grandeur. Throughout the church, visitors will discover a wealth of religious artwork, including numerous stained-glass windows that add a touch of beauty to the sacred space.
Along the right and left aisles of the church, visitors will find confessional booths, offering a place for reflection and spiritual guidance. Additionally, the church boasts a magnificent organ, originally crafted in 1909. This organ serves as a testament to the church’s commitment to preserving its historical and cultural heritage.

Parque Envigado plays host to a variety of public events, including outdoor concerts that infuse the atmosphere with music and celebration. Notably, during the Christmas season, the park is adorned with festive light displays, often extending their enchantment to the church, creating a magical ambiance.
