Historic Roman Catholic in Envigado

Located in the picturesque Manrique neighborhood of Medellín, Iglesia Señor de las Misericordias stands as a notable and historic Roman Catholic church. For those who appreciate the beauty of old churches, this neo-Gothic-style masterpiece is definitely worth a visit. Adorned with an array of religious artwork, Iglesia Señor de las Misericordias holds a special place among the architectural wonders of Medellín and the Aburrá Valley

The history of the church

The construction of Iglesia Señor de las Misericordias took place between 1921 and 1931, designed by the talented architect Andrés Lorenzo Huarte. This magnificent church, along with the adjacent monastery of Hermanos Carmelitas Descalzos, occupies an entire block in Manrique, spanning from Calles 67 and 68 to Carreras 47 and 48.
In recognition of its cultural, artistic, and religious significance, Iglesia Señor de las Misericordias and the adjacent convent were declared a patrimony of Medellín in 1999. However, the passage of time has taken its toll on the structure, leading to gradual deterioration of the roof, walls, and the atrium. While the monastery underwent restoration, completed in January 2009, the church itself is in need of a similar restoration project. With its complex details, ornaments, and artistic architectural elements requiring precision and resources, efforts are underway to secure funding for the much-needed restoration.

Inside Iglesia Señor de las Misericordias

Stepping inside Iglesia Señor de las Misericordias, visitors are greeted by a stunning interior adorned in white with beige trim, complemented by wooden pews that add a touch of warmth to the space. The church is also home to an impressive collection of religious artwork, including several captivating stained-glass windows. While many churches boast confessionals on both sides, Iglesia Señor de las Misericordias stands unique, featuring confessionals exclusively on the right side. Additionally, a grand organ can be found on the second floor, adding to the church’s overall grandeur.
Among the architectural highlights of Iglesia Señor de las Misericordias are its three wooden altars, with the main altar housing the revered statue of Our Lady of Carmen. The church’s meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail are evident throughout, making it a spiritual and visual delight for visitors.
