The Nacional vs Medellín clásico of October 2026 is already history: on Wednesday, October 14, Atlético Nacional beat Independiente Medellín (DIM) 3-2 in a single-match Copa BetPlay quarterfinal at the Atanasio Girardot, per El Tiempo’s live match coverage and its post-match report. The Estadio Atanasio Girardot, in the Laureles-Estadio area and served by Metro Line B’s Estadio station, hosted EDC Colombia just three days earlier. This is what happened, what it says about the venue, and what to know before you go to a derby yourself.

How the Atanasio pitch recovered after EDC

Whether the grass would hold up was the open question all week. EDC Colombia ran October 10–11 at the Atanasio Girardot complex, and attendees were let onto the pitch itself, adding load to the grass, according to Infobae. Early schedules even listed the venue as “to be defined,” with Minuto30 citing the stadium’s temporary unavailability and unofficial talk of Itagüí or another ground.

Inder director Eduardo Silva Meluk committed to handing the stadium back to Nacional by midday on October 14, Infobae reported. By October 13, Minuto30 described a bright, even green pitch with only temporary cover marks, and said the match was not at risk of postponement and tickets were nearly sold out.

The grass was not perfect on the night. El Tiempo’s live coverage noted large puddles early in the match, though the surface was later described as acceptable.

Nacional vs Medellín clásico, October 2026: the 3-2 result

James Rodríguez, Colombia’s national-team captain, started for Nacional, according to the lineup in El Tiempo’s live coverage, which closed with a full-time entry. Goals, per that coverage (minutes vary by a minute between outlets):

  • 22’ César Haydar (Nacional) makes it 1-0 with a header, after VAR disallowed an earlier goal for offside.
  • 40’ Frank Fabra scores an own goal after a Didier Moreno header: 2-0.
  • 62’ Agustín Martegani pulls one back from the penalty spot: 2-1.
  • 65’ Andrés Felipe Román restores the two-goal lead: 3-1.
  • 69’ Martegani scores again: 3-2.

DIM had a late equalizer ruled out for offside, and Nacional goalkeeper Franco Armani, who returned to the club in July 2026, made several key saves. Telemedellín, Win Sports and Vanguardia also report the 3-2 result and the semifinal berth; Win Sports and Vanguardia put Haydar’s opener at the 23rd minute. Timings here follow El Tiempo.

Nacional advances to the semifinals, where they wait for the winner of Once Caldas vs. Santa Fe, per Telemedellín.

Match-day planning around the Atanasio

The 8:30 p.m. kickoff fell on a day of national marches, with morning concentrations in Medellín per Noticias Caracol; any big night calls for extra travel time.

How to get clásico paisa tickets and attend the next derby

A clásico is a ticketed, high-demand event, and this one was reported nearly sold out days ahead by Minuto30 (final attendance was not confirmed), so plan early:

  • Buy only through official channels. Clásico tickets have been sold online and at Tu Boleta points, and in past editions also at box offices inside the Unidad Deportiva Atanasio Girardot, per Medellín’s city press office. Buying elsewhere risks fakes.
  • Check which stand your ticket is for. Both clubs share the Atanasio Girardot, and visiting-fan policy changes by match. Confirm the rules and stand for your match on the club pages or Tu Boleta, and wear neutral colors if unsure. For context, Nacional barred away fans from a 2024 Copa BetPlay clásico, while a 2025 league clásico admitted visitors in set stands.
  • Arrive early and travel light. Bag checks at the gates are routine at football matches, so travel light and carry ID as a precaution; confirm entry rules in your ticket’s terms.
  • Plan your exit. Match nights end late; use the Metro (Line B, Estadio station) while it runs (check Metro de Medellín hours) or a licensed ride, and don’t walk alone afterward.

As of October 16, 2026, the date of the next league clásico had not been confirmed in the sources reviewed. Check the Dimayor fixture calendar and the clubs’ official channels (Atlético Nacional, Independiente Medellín) before booking anything, and the Metro’s site for operating hours. Rules, kickoff times and ticketing change by match.
