The best things to do in Medellín this weekend are a free Afro-Colombian festival, a large-format tango show and, on Sunday, the city’s Ciclovía. Festiafro takes over Parque de los Deseos and the Moravia cultural centre on Saturday, October 3, and “Medellín, Un Siglo de Tango” plays Teatro El Tesoro on Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3. Details below are as reported on October 2, 2026 (the Festiafro release is dated September 30, 2026); schedules can shift, so confirm before you go.

Festiafro 2026 Medellín: free, Saturday, October 3

Festiafro was listed for October 10 in the Alcaldía’s early-2026 calendar of major city events, but the later release confirms Saturday, October 3, which is the date used here. The 19th edition, announced in a city release dated September 30, 2026, celebrates the food, music and traditions of Colombia’s Pacific coast and Chocó. Entry is free, and the city’s culture secretariat lists 15 activities across gastronomy, music, dance, entrepreneurship and traditional knowledge (Alcaldía de Medellín).

The day runs across two venues:

  • From noon, Parque de los Deseos: stalls from Afro-community entrepreneurs, which is where the Pacific and Chocó food is.
  • 1:00 p.m., Centro de Desarrollo Cultural de Moravia: the dance competition.
  • From 4:00 p.m., Parque de los Deseos: concerts.

The announced concert lineup, per the same release:

  • Banda Los Paniaguas
  • El Rickman
  • Jhonby
  • Ensamble Afro Pacífico
  • Sol de Abril
  • Banda La Firma
  • Alex Pichi
  • La Sucursal del Golpe, a group from Cali

The city says it has invested about 800 million pesos in the festival over two years, with roughly 6,000 attendees in recent editions. It is organized by the Secretaría de Cultura Ciudadana with Casa Tumac, La Promotora Cultural and community groups (same source).

Practical note: for Parque de los Deseos, take the Metro to Universidad station, which connects on foot toward the University of Antioquia campus; the park sits in that university-area complex. The Moravia centre is a separate venue in the north of the city, so take a taxi or rideshare between the 1 p.m. dance competition and the 4 p.m. concerts.

”Medellín, Un Siglo de Tango” at Teatro El Tesoro

This production traces a century of tango in Medellín, from its arrival in the early 20th century to its place in the city’s culture today. It is told in four acts, including the impact of Carlos Gardel’s death in 1935 (El Colombiano).

What’s on stage, per El Colombiano:

  • About 30 performers: a live orchestra of local musicians, eight dance couples and three singers.
  • Maestro Fausto Salinas on bandoneón, with arrangements by Fabio Sánchez.
  • More than 30 songs, from “El Choclo” and Gardel’s “Volver” to contemporary pieces, closing with a modern arrangement of “La Cumparsita.”
  • Concept and script by Jhony Blandón, founder of the El Candombe dance academy, with Clara Olarte of the Apus Tango Foundation.

Performances are October 2 and 3, and tickets are sold through TuBoleta. As of October 2, 2026, no show time or price range appears in the El Colombiano report, so we have not guessed: time and price TBC, check TuBoleta’s event page before you buy. Our own events listing may also carry updates.

More tango is coming later this month, per the same report: “Tango Negro” on October 14 at Teatro Pablo Tobón Uribe, and a historical tango tour at Casa Gardeliana on October 17.

More things to do in Medellín this weekend: Sunday, October 4

Sunday is the day for Medellín’s Ciclovía, when main roads are closed to cars for cyclists, runners and walkers. Typical Sunday and holiday hours, per INDER Medellín:

  • Main routes: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Avenida El Río, El Poblado, Cerro El Volador and Estadio (Alcaldía de Medellín, 2024 schedule).
  • Neighborhood routes: from 8 a.m.
  • Regular routes also include Palmas, per El Colombiano’s 2025 year-end schedule coverage.

Both sources predate this weekend and we did not find an October 2026 notice, so check current hours and route changes with INDER before heading out. For how closures and the Metro behave on big outdoor days, see our Medellín Marathon road-closure guide, and browse our activities and events pages for more.

If you want a night out after the festival, our guide to the best rooftop bars in El Poblado is a good starting point, and El Poblado is also the neighborhood where Teatro El Tesoro sits. Planning ahead for later in October? See where to celebrate Halloween in Medellín.

How to plan the weekend

  • Friday evening: the tango show, if you can get tickets (confirm the time on TuBoleta first).
  • Saturday afternoon: Festiafro. Arrive around noon for the food stalls, or aim for the 4 p.m. concerts at Parque de los Deseos, reached via Universidad station.
  • Saturday night: the second tango performance at Teatro El Tesoro in the south of the city. Parque de los Deseos is in the north (Aranjuez), so allow extra time if you do both the same day and use a taxi or rideshare for the evening leg.
  • Sunday morning: Ciclovía, which typically winds down around 1 p.m.

Information current as of October 2, 2026, from the Alcaldía de Medellín and El Colombiano. Lineups, times and prices can change.
