Jardín Botánico

A free, leafy escape in the north of the city — orchids, iguanas, and a giant wooden canopy, next to Parque Explora.

The quick answer

Medellín's botanical garden is a free, shady oasis in the north of the city: orchids, a lake, wild iguanas in the trees, and a striking wooden canopy structure. Easy to combine with Parque Explora next door.

When the city gets loud, the Jardín Botánico is where locals go to breathe. It’s free, it’s central, and it’s a proper botanical garden: a lake, a butterfly house, one of Colombia’s best orchid collections, and iguanas dozing in the branches.

What to see

The centrepiece is the Orquideorama, a sculptural wooden canopy of flower-like “trees” that shelters events and the orchid collection. Otherwise it’s a place to wander, sit, and picnic. It sits right beside Parque Explora and the Planetario, so the three make an easy half-day in the north.

Getting there

Take Metro Line A to Universidad — the garden is a two-minute walk from the station.
