A Beautiful Church in Guayabal in Medellín

If you’re a fan of old and historic churches, then Iglesia de Cristo Rey (Christ the King Church) in the Guayabal comuna of Medellín is an absolute must-visit. This notable Roman Catholic church not only holds historical significance but also boasts exquisite stained-glass windows and an impressive collection of religious artwork.
One of the church’s standout features is its bell tower, reported to be one of the oldest in Medellín. The grandeur of this architectural marvel is astonishing, complete with traditional bronze, iron, and cast copper bells that chime regularly throughout the day, adding a touch of charm to the surrounding area.

The history of La Iglesia de Cristo Rey

In 1928, the foundation stone of the temple was laid. It was the beginning of what would become a construction project spanning over 20 years. By the 1930s, the community was already working towards the goal to finish the construction. The land where the Cristo Rey parish was built belonged to Mr. Santiago Díez and his wife, Mrs. Julia Montoya, who donated it for the construction of the temple.
It was a time when the Guayabal territory had vast expanses of land for livestock and farming, but few residential houses. There was no temple in the area. However, since they belonged to the rural area of Belén, if they wanted to participate in any sacraments, attend Mass, or sing a funeral hymn, they had to make the journey to the Nuestra Señora de Belén temple, which was still located in the main park of Belén.
The church first opened its doors in 1951. For the past decades, it has faithfully served as a Roman Catholic place of worship, drawing both locals and visitors alike.
