In the beautiful city of Medellín, Iglesia Jesús Nazareno, or Jesus of Nazareth Church, stands as one of the most beautiful and distinctive churches. Surprisingly, this hidden gem is often overlooked by English language travel guidebooks, but its allure and significance make it a must-visit destination for those exploring the city.

The history of the church

The history of Iglesia Jesús Nazareno dates back to the mid-20th century when it was constructed by Claretian missionaries between 1941 and 1953. This magnificent church holds a special place in the religious heritage of Medellín. Located on Avenida Juan del Corral, which is popularly referred to as “Calle de Los Muertos” or the “Street of the Dead,” the church is surrounded by a unique and solemn atmosphere. The street earned its nickname due to the majority of funerals taking place here, making it an integral part of the city’s funeral traditions.
Adjacent to Iglesia Jesús Nazareno, between the church and the Prado metro station, lie over 20 funeral parlors, creating an evocative ambiance. Interestingly, some funeral services are also held within the church itself, adding to its significance as a spiritual center for the community. Just three blocks north of the church, you’ll find the San Vicente De Paul Hospital, an essential institution affiliated with the Universidad de Antioquia. The proximity of the hospital has led to reports of funeral parlors seeking customers like vultures, targeting families with deceased loved ones at the hospital.

Inside Iglesia Jesús Nazareno

Step inside Iglesia Jesús Nazareno, and you’ll be greeted by a breathtaking interior adorned with white walls and delicate gold accents. The church boasts an impressive collection of religious artwork, creating a sense of reverence and awe. The stained-glass windows are particularly noteworthy, casting vibrant hues of light that dance upon the church’s surfaces, creating a serene and ethereal atmosphere.
Like many other churches in Medellín, Iglesia Jesús Nazareno features confessional booths alongside the right and left aisles. These sacred spaces offer visitors an opportunity for introspection, reflection, and spiritual renewal.

Getting There & Parking

Reaching Iglesia Jesús Nazareno is very easy. The church is located a mere three blocks away from the Prado metro station on Line A, making it easily reachable for both locals and tourists. As you make your way from the metro station to the church, you’ll encounter a variety of funeral parlors and small shops, each contributing to the unique character of the neighborhood.

Alternatively, you can opt for a taxi to reach the church. Simply ask any taxi driver to take you to “Iglesia Jesús Nazareno en el Centro cerca estacion Prado,” and most drivers will be familiar with its location or at least know the proximity of the Prado metro station.
