The history of the church

The history of Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario dates back to the late nineteenth century when the Hato Viejo Chapel served as the place of worship for the Catholic community in Bello. However, the chapel eventually became inadequate to accommodate the growing congregation and was in a state of disrepair. Churchgoers expressed their concerns to the Bishop of Medellín, Bernardo Herrera Restrepo, prompting the authorization of a new church construction project.

The site chosen for the new church was Parque Bello, located across from the Hato Viejo Chapel. Jesús Mejía and Horacio Rodríguez initially designed the plans for the church, and construction began in the early twentieth century, starting with the foundation. However, various circumstances led to the suspension of construction, and repairs were made to the Hato Viejo Chapel to enable its continued use.

It was not until 1936, several decades later, that the project was revitalized under the guidance of Father Felix Mejia. Italian engineer and architect Albano Germanetti was entrusted with the construction, presenting new plans that were ultimately accepted. Finally, in October 1947, Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario opened its doors to the faithful.
