Since its inauguration on November 3, 1972, this open-air mall has undergone several expansions and now boasts over 230 stores.

The History of San Diego Mall

The history of San Diego Mall is closely intertwined with the vision of a group of local Antioqueños. These visionary individuals conceptualized the project and brought it to fruition, forever changing the shopping habits of consumers and setting the stage for the development of numerous shopping malls across Colombia.
The mall’s name, “San Diego,” is believed to be inspired by the Western-style shopping centers found in San Diego, California. This connection is evident in the open-air design, reminiscent of some of the malls in its American namesake.
Centro Comercial San Diego played a crucial role in promoting urban development in the southern part of Medellín. Its establishment spurred the growth of commercial and residential areas surrounding the mall, transforming the landscape and creating a vibrant community. As Medellín continued to flourish, the mall underwent four expansions, enhancing its offerings and accommodating its growing clientele. Notably, the fourth expansion introduced a food court on the second floor, providing visitors with a wide array of dining options, and additional parking spaces to cater to the increasing number of shoppers.

Getting There & Parking​

Centro Comercial San Diego, situated in La Candelaria (El Centro) along Avenida Poblado, offers various transportation options for easy access to the mall’s location. While some mistakenly believe the mall to be located in El Poblado, the mall is, in fact, situated in La Candelaria.

Metro: For those using the Medellín Metro, reaching Centro Comercial San Diego is a breeze. Located approximately four blocks from the Exposiciones metro station on Line A, the mall is a mere five-minute walk to the east from the station. Embarking on a short stroll will lead you straight to your next shopping destination.

Tax / Uber: If you prefer to rely on taxis, rest assured that any taxi driver in Medellín will be familiar with the location of San Diego Mall. Additionally, catching a taxi at the mall is usually hassle-free, as a line of taxis can often be found conveniently stationed at the mall entrance. Of course you can also opt to use one of the ride-hailing apps like Uber or InDrive.

Car: For visitors opting to drive, Centro Comercial San Diego offers ample parking space with over 1,400 parking spots available. This ensures that you can easily find a place to park your vehicle without the hassle of searching for parking elsewhere.
